Use of relaxants for moderate insomnia
Sleep is a physiological and natural situation of the body, in which there is a reversible loss of consciousness and motor activity. The individual, when asleep, presents a total or partial loss of the ability to respond to external stimuli, depending on whether the sleep is deep or not. For its part, wakefulness is the opposite of sleep, and corresponds to when the individual is awake.

Insomnia is the most common sleep disturbance. It is one of the most frequent symptoms that affect the population, preceded only by pain. About 10% of it presents it chronically, and almost 50% suffer from it at some point in their life. Insomnia greatly affects the elderly population, and especially postmenopausal women.
It is characterized by at least one of the following symptoms:
• Inability on the part of the individual to fall asleep.
• Increase in the number of nocturnal awakenings.
• Decreased sleep time, the individual waking up too early.
• Feeling that sleep has been insufficient.
Insomnia can lead to fatigue, anxiety, asthenia, and decreased alertness. Normally, daytime sleepiness appears, which can lead to home or work accidents. It can also be a great personal, social and economic burden.
Insomnia can be caused by a multitude of causes. Knowing its etiology is vital, since the treatment will depend on this cause and the type of insomnia.
In case of insomnia, it is always preferable to follow some preventive measures than to establish a pharmacological treatment. Among these measures we can highlight:

• Follow a ritual before bed. Putting on pajamas, brushing your teeth, brushing your hair, or taking a bath before going to bed can signal to your body that bedtime is approaching.
• Do relaxation techniques. There is no point trying to fall asleep when you are hyperaroused.
• Get a suitable environment for sleeping. The lighting, temperature and noise level must be controlled.
Hypnotic drugs are the treatment of choice for insomnia.
Among the hypnotics, barbiturates were widely used, but due to their toxicity, their enzyme-inducing effects, their dependency syndrome and the tolerance they generate, their use has been abandoned. Currently only phenobarbital and thiopental are used for the treatment of epilepsy and as inducers of anesthesia.
Currently, drugs that act on benzodiazepine receptors, such as benzodiazepines, cyclopyrrolones (zopiclone) or imidazopyridines (zolpidem), are used more. All stimulate GABAergic transmission by binding to the benzodiazepine receptor.
Medicinal plants can be very useful for treating mild or moderate insomnia. Due to the almost total absence of adverse reactions, they allow long-term treatments. Among the medicinal plants used for insomnia, the best known are valerian, lemon balm, linden, orange blossom, passionflower or hawthorn.
Although treatment with medicinal plants can be effective, it is recommended not to abuse their use, and if insomnia lasts more than 1-2 weeks, you should see a doctor, since there could be a serious underlying pathology, such as apnea of the dream.
