Tips to take care of your skin from the sun

With the arrival of the summer season, the days get longer and leisure time outdoors increases, thus increasing our exposure to the sun. The sun's rays make it possible for our body to produce vitamin D, essential for strengthening bones and teeth, and contribute to improving emotional well-being, but it can also be harmful if we do not protect ourselves adequately and expose ourselves to it excessively or for a long time.

To minimize premature aging of the skin caused by ultraviolet radiation - UVA and UVB rays - and minimize the risk of developing diseases such as melanoma, it is crucial to enjoy the sun and its benefits safely. Sunscreens are the best allies to achieve this.

We give you 10 tips to enjoy the sun in a healthy way this summer:

1.- Exposure time. Limit the time of exposure to the sun and avoid the 12 to 16 hour period, when the solar radiation is more vertical and intense. Try not to fall asleep in the sun.

2.- Outdoor activities. Take extra precautions whenever you do outdoor activities, not just when you're on the beach or in the river. Even if the day is cloudy, ultraviolet radiation passes through the clouds and is reflected off the water, sand or grass. Protect yourself anyway!

3 kids. It is not recommended to expose children under 3 years of age to the sun. Protect them with clothing, hats, and glasses and apply a high-factor, water-resistant sunscreen.

4.- Phototype. Each type of skin needs a different sun protection, also taking into account the age and circumstances of the exposure. Take special care the first days of exposure to the sun in summer.

5.- Sunscreen. Choose a suitable sunscreen for your skin phototype or body area. Apply it evenly, on dry skin, half an hour before exposure and repeat the application every 30 minutes or after bathing or drying off.

6.- Sensitive areas. Pay attention to the most sensitive parts of the body: face, neck, shoulders, décolleté, ears, hands and insteps. The protection of the lips should be done with photoprotective bars and that of the hair with specific products. Don't forget to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.

7.- Clothes. Also protect your skin with clothing (shirts or pants), preferably light colors, and your head with hats.

8.- Hydration. Drink water frequently and apply moisturizer to your skin after being out in the sun.

9.- Medications. Be aware that some medications can cause photosensitivity reactions when exposed to the sun. If you have a prescribed treatment, consult the leaflet. When in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

10.- Check your skin. Before any change in the color, shape or size of spots or moles, consult your doctor or specialist.
